Wings and Halo
The two creations Wings and Halo were designed by Wolfgang and Heron following a high-profile national competition sponsored by Delancey and The Architecture Foundation. Their brief was to produce work for the new N1 retail plaza in Islington that transcended the boundaries between art and architecture.
The sculptures, inspired by the Angel, Islington, symbolically herald the entrances into the plaza. From Liverpool Road the elegant stainless steel wings flow above and around the functional kiosk’s rounded body.
Suspended at a complementary point, a stainless steel halo floats above the Upper Street entrance to the plaza. During the day it reflects natural light; at night, integral fibre optics create striking visual effects.
Islington Green War Memorial
Highly visible from both Essex Road and Upper Street is Islington Green’s war memorial which was designed by internationally-renowned sculptor John Maine RA. The sculpture was officially dedicated to the fallen in a Service of Remembrance on November 12 2006 by Islington Mayor Cllr Jyoti Vaja.
The pale granite ring, three metres in diameter, is symbolic of the acts of remembrance that have taken place at Islington Green since WW1, as well as of timelessness, unity and continuity, says Mr Maine, whose sculptures adorn landscapes and buildings from Japan and Australia to the South Bank.
